Bundestag President Enters Gaza With Military, Avoids Meeting Palestinians

German Bundestag President Julia Klöckner became the first German politician to visit Gaza since Hamas’ October 7 attack, entering with Israeli security forces.

Historic Visit Under Israeli Security

Julia Klöckner is the first German politician to visit the Gaza Strip since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. She spent over an hour in the coastal territory controlled by Israeli forces. The CDU politician welcomed Israel’s decision to grant her access and appealed for entry to be allowed to international observers.

The Bundestag President is on a three-day visit to Israel, though journalists accompanying her were not permitted to enter the Gaza Strip.

Negotiations and Security Concerns

Klöckner’s Gaza visit required extensive negotiations, with uncertainty about Israeli permission remaining until the evening before. The Israeli Knesset played a significant role as it had invited her. For security reasons, Klöckner wore a protective vest and helmet while accompanied by Israeli soldiers.

Political Criticism

Green Party leader Franziska Brantner criticized Klöckner for not meeting with Palestinian representatives, suggesting this created a one-sided view of the situation. SPD spokesperson Adis Ahmetović had previously criticized the military escort as a “glaring signal,” noting Gaza’s destruction and the displacement of over a million people.

Defense of Visit Approach

Klöckner defended her approach, stating she couldn’t see everything during her short visit but emphasized conversations with opposition figures in Jerusalem and both Israeli and Palestinian NGOs. She acknowledged Israeli military control over what was shown during her visit but maintained her right as “a friend of Israel” to form her own opinion.

Memorial Visit

Klöckner visited a memorial at the Supernova festival site, where Hamas killed approximately 400 people and abducted over 40 others on October 7, 2023. She comforted a mother who lost her daughter in the attacks, acknowledging the “great pain” experienced by victims.
