Citroën Crashes Through Concrete Barriers at S17 Terminus: A Recurring Hazard

A Citroën driver lost control and struck concrete barriers at the end of the S17 expressway near Sulejówek late Friday night, marking the latest in a series of similar accidents at this location.

The Incident near Sulejówek

Between Friday and Saturday, May 22–23, a Citroën failed to adjust to road conditions and struck concrete barriers at the end of the S17 route near Sulejówek at 0:41. Emergency services, including the fire department, medical teams, and police, were dispatched to the scene, though a medical helicopter was recalled before arrival.

Firefighters secured the site and transferred the 30-year-old driver and 42-year-old passenger to medical personnel. Preliminary findings indicate the driver was sober and possessed a valid license; police are currently investigating the circumstances of the collision.

A History of Roadway Accidents

The intersection at the end of the S17 near Sulejówek and Zakręt has been the site of multiple similar crashes in recent years. On April 4, 2026, an Audi led police on a pursuit through Warsaw before crashing into the same concrete barriers, resulting in five hospitalizations. Similar incidents involving an Iveco delivery van on September 8, 2025, and a Volvo truck on March 24, 2025, also saw vehicles breaching barriers and exiting the roadway.

Prior to these, on April 16, 2024, an Audi failed to navigate the turn at the S17 exit onto Trakt Brzeski, striking the barriers. In several of these historical cases, emergency responders arrived to find vehicles abandoned by their occupants.

Incomplete Infrastructure and Safety Risks

The cluster of accidents is tied to the unfinished state of the Eastern Warsaw Bypass. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways reports that approximately 130 km of the S17 route remains incomplete, including 16 km of the bypass linking Drewnica, Ząbki, and the Warsaw East region.

This infrastructure gap creates transitional roadway layouts where drivers must significantly reduce their speed. When motorists fail to adhere to these requirements, they frequently collide with the existing concrete barriers or veer off the road entirely.
