On Monday, May 18, Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty stressed that the government, parliament, and the president must forge a unified stance on national defense and foreign policy despite current tensions.
Navigating Difficult Cohabitation
Reflecting on the year since the presidential election won by Karol Nawrocki, Czarzasty admitted that collaboration between the centers of power has been difficult. However, he emphasized that this cohabitation must eventually function effectively.
Czarzasty argued that Poland’s national interests, particularly in foreign policy, must transcend political divides. He expressed optimism, noting that a consensus on these critical issues is slowly taking shape.
A Unified Stance on U.S. Troops
Addressing the recent reports regarding U.S. military presence in Poland, the Sejm Speaker called for a common position among all political factions. He urged all sides to prioritize national security over internal political friction.
Czarzasty insisted that finding blame is counterproductive. Instead, he maintained that all centers of power must speak with one voice to ensure the country’s security interests are upheld.
Government Response to Pentagon Moves
The Pentagon recently signaled plans to pause the rotation of four thousand U.S. troops to Poland, part of a broader reduction of American forces in Europe. In response, Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed he is in contact with NATO and U.S. military leadership.
Tusk reassured the public that the changes are logistical and will not compromise Polish security. He cautioned politicians against exploiting security matters for short-term political gains, citing the historical importance of national consensus on defense.
