Tomio Okamura, a far‑right, anti‑EU leader, has been chosen as the new speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies, a move that has raised concerns about Russia‑friendly rhetoric.
Election Results
Tomio Okamura was elected as speaker of the Czech Chamber of Deputies, with support from 107 of 197 deputies. This is not surprising, as members of the newly formed coalition (ANO – Motorists – SPD) had already pledged to do this despite opposition votes.
“I understand I am not a candidate of everyone, but I promise that if I gain trust and am elected, I will be an impartial speaker for all,” said Tomio Okamura, quoted by Reuters.
Opposition Criticism
“He belongs to the group of politicians who evidently spread a pro‑Russian narrative in the public space,” said departing prime minister Petr Fiala.
The same sentiment was echoed by the candidate’s brother, Hayato Okamura.
I see a serious threat in electing someone who has long challenged our membership in the European Union and NATO,” said a politician representing the opposing side in the political arena.
Profile of Okamura
Tomio Okamura is the leader of the far‑right, anti‑EU party Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD). The party is a partner of Alternative for Germany in the European Parliament.
According to journalists, Okamura’s political career in the Czech Parliament began in 2013.
