Denmark Surprised by Trump’s Tariff Announcement

Danish officials call Trump’s sudden tariff decision a surprise despite recent constructive talks with US counterparts.

Denmark: ‘It Was a Surprise’

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen admitted that Saturday’s tariff announcement was unexpected for Copenhagen. “It was a surprise,” he stated, noting that Danish authorities had held “constructive” talks with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio just days earlier. Rasmussen emphasized that Copenhagen “agrees with the US” on the need for greater involvement in Arctic security.

Trump: Tariffs Until ‘Purchase of Greenland’

US President Donald Trump announced that starting February 1, 2026, the US will impose 10% tariffs on goods from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland. The rate will increase to 25% starting June 1, with tariffs remaining in effect until the US signs an agreement to “purchase” Greenland.

‘Incompetence on Stilts’

Trump’s decision also surprised Americans. Former US Secretary of State Richard Haass commented: “We could have easily negotiated economic and strategic solutions with Denmark and Greenland. The demands of ownership, threats, and tariffs are unnecessary and destructive. This is incompetence in foreign policy on stilts.”

Sweden: ‘We Will Not Be Blackmailed’

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson unequivocally rejected Washington’s reasoning. “We will not be blackmailed. Only Denmark and Greenland can decide matters concerning Greenland,” stated the head of the Swedish government.

France: Threats Will Not Change Our Position

French President Emmanuel Macron was equally firm. “No intimidation or threats will influence our decisions,” emphasized the French leader, referring to the announced US tariffs.

Military Presence in Greenland

France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Netherlands, and the UK have sent small groups of soldiers to Greenland for “Arctic Endurance” exercises led by Denmark. Poland officially does not plan to send troops to Greenland.
