Donald Tusk commented on Karol Nawrocki’s doubts over the wind turbine act, which introduces further freezing of electricity prices while changing existing provisions.
Donald Tusk Criticizes Karol Nawrocki
“President Nawrocki promised cheap electricity and, as a result, decided to veto the act guaranteeing cheap electricity. What don’t you understand?” – Premier wrote on Tuesday, Aug. 12, referring to the government’s amendment of the wind turbine law. Presidential spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz informed in a Monday interview with PAP that the solution presented by the government would not gain the president’s approval. In an interview with Polish Radio, he clarified that the president never said Karol Nawrocki would veto the wind turbine act. He pointed out that the president does not like combining two independent legal matters in one draft. The initiative provides that electricity prices will remain frozen at 500 PLN/MWh until the end of 2025. The spokesperson also noted that it reduces the minimum distance of wind turbines from residential buildings. “This is a purely political maneuver,” the spokesperson said in the Polish Radio interview.
Who Will Decide Wind Turbine Distances?
The draft eliminates the existing “10H” rule, which required wind turbines to be at least ten times their total height from buildings. It introduces a minimum distance of 500 meters instead of the previous 700. However, local communities and local governments will determine the final distance. They will set wind farm locations to meet their needs. “The Regional Environmental Protection Agency oversees proper wind farm locations and protects local communities. Wind projects will only be carried out based on the local land‑use plan,” said the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
How to Achieve Cheap Electricity?
Rafał Leśkiewicz reminded that the president repeatedly said he wants not only a freeze but also a reduction in energy prices. The ministry reports that cheap electricity will be possible not just thanks to a price freeze, as on‑land wind energy is the cheapest source of electricity. “The law, once enacted, will bring real socio‑economic benefits: new jobs, steady municipal budget revenues from property taxes, access to cheap green energy for all consumers,” wrote the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
Karol Nawrocki Promises Cheap Electricity
In early February, during a campaign meeting with voters in Augustów (Podlaskie Voivodeship), Karol Nawrocki pledged: “I guarantee that within the first 100 days of taking office as President of the Republic, I will implement with full determination the ‘33 percent electricity’ plan, meaning you will pay about one-third less for your electricity bills,” the former candidate said. The presidential spokesperson on Monday assured that Karol Nawrocki will fulfill this promise.
