ECJ Considering Million-Euro Fines for Poland Over Water Quality Laws

Poland faces potential million-euro fines from the European Court of Justice as the deadline to implement EU water quality directives has passed.

Risk Assessment System

Poland is required to implement a risk assessment and risk management system throughout the entire water supply chain.

This system aims to ensure water quality at all stages of the supply process.

Responsibility for Water Quality

The responsibility for tap water quality falls on water suppliers, including local governments and municipal companies.

Building managers are also accountable for internal water supply systems within their properties.

Assessment Requirements

Risk assessments must be conducted every six years to monitor water quality.

The results of these assessments need to be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Expired Implementation Deadline

The deadline for transposing EU Directive 2020/2184 on water quality intended for human consumption was January 12, 2023.

Poland has missed this deadline, potentially triggering penalties from the European Court of Justice.
