Fake Doctor Scams Elderly Woman Out of 40,000 Zloty

On Żoliborz, scammers posing as a doctor duped an 81-year-old woman into handing over 40,000 zloty for a non-existent lifesaving drug.

The Scam

On Żoliborz, scammers posing as a doctor targeted an 81-year-old woman. They falsely claimed her sister was critically ill with sepsis and needed an expensive drug costing 50,000 euros. The fraudsters claimed 30,000 zloty had already been paid, leaving 40,000 zloty outstanding. When the woman stated she had this amount, they sent a courier to collect it.

The woman handed the cash to a young man who arrived at her apartment. She later realized she had been scammed.

Police Warning

Police warn that “doctor” scams pose a real threat, especially to the elderly who can be manipulated by emotions and fear for loved ones. Medical staff never demand cash payments via courier. If contacted, hang up and verify the situation directly with the family or hospital using official numbers.

Prevention Advice

Never give money or personal details to strangers. Report any fraud attempt immediately to police by dialing 112.
