Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, once dubbed the “Trump whisperer,” cautioned that Iran possesses significant leverage amid ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations and tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Stubb Highlights Ongoing U.S.-Iran Negotiations
On Monday, April 13th, Finnish President Alexander Stubb noted that negotiations between the U.S. and Iran are continuing, albeit at a lower level. He assessed this as a positive signal, but simultaneously expressed concern that a resolution may not be reached quickly.
U.S. Blockade of Iranian Ports – Premature Assessment
Stubb indicated it is too early to evaluate the impact of the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports. He stated that, from an American perspective, the blockade could be effective due to existing infrastructure, but questioned the potential for conflict with China should the blockade escalate.
Strait of Hormuz as a “Nuclear Weapon”
President Stubb described the Strait of Hormuz as having become a “de facto nuclear weapon,” impacting not only energy prices but also the costs of fertilizers and food. He suggested the Trump administration created this situation by initiating a “war of choice.”
European Coalition Forming to De-escalate
According to the President, a coalition of approximately 40 European countries is forming. A meeting is scheduled for Friday at the level of heads of state and government to discuss de-escalation, finding a solution, and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, respecting freedom of navigation. He emphasized this will be a “coalition of the willing,” comprised of nations wanting to assist the U.S., potentially after the conflict concludes.
Three Scenarios for Russia-Ukraine War
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Stubb outlined three main potential scenarios for this year. The most likely, he believes, is a continuation of the war. Other possibilities include a negotiated settlement or the weakening of one side due to external factors, such as a conflict in Iran or a collapse of the Russian economy.
Ukraine Dominates Militarily, Russia Suffers Heavy Losses
Stubb assessed that Ukraine currently dominates Russia from a military standpoint. He estimated that Ukrainian forces kill approximately 35,000 Russian soldiers monthly, while Russia struggles to recruit enough new personnel to compensate for these losses. He also stated that 95% of Russian fatalities result from drone attacks.
