A fire broke out in the attic of a two‑storey apartment building on 17 Stycznia Street in Ciechanów on Saturday morning, prompting evacuations and the discovery of a man’s body in a ground‑floor flat.
Fire Ignites in Attic
Before 12 p.m. on Saturday, a fire started in the attic of a two‑storey apartment building located in the Bloki estate near the Dekada shopping centre. Firefighters, police and a medical rescue team were dispatched immediately.
Evacuation and Immediate Response
The fire was confined to the uninhabited top floor. It was quickly located, and the firefighting effort focused on extinguishing the source of the blaze and removing a damaged section of the roof to prevent further spread.
When firefighters arrived, four occupants had already left their units on their own. No injuries were reported and no one required hospitalization.
Safety Checks and Occupants’ Return
The decision on whether residents can return to their apartments will be made after construction oversight completes an assessment of the building’s structural condition and the extent of damage caused by heat and firefighting activities.
Body Found, Investigation Ongoing
In a separate location on the ground floor, firefighters uncovered the body of a man. Police are continuing work to establish his identity and the circumstances of his death, which appears to have occurred earlier and not as a result of the fire. Initial information suggests the victim was a homeless person.
Authorities Seek Full Explanation
Police are conducting on‑site investigations and securing evidence under the supervision of a prosecutor. Firefighters are inspecting the structure for hidden fire sources, with a priority on fully elucidating the cause of the blaze and the death of the discovered man.
