Former Polish Minister Plans Controversial Warsaw Rally on Russian Victory Day

A former Polish deputy treasury minister announced plans for a rally in Warsaw on May 9th, Russia’s Victory Day, sparking controversy due to the date and his past statements.

Former PiS Minister Announces Controversial Initiative in Warsaw

A former deputy treasury minister from the Jarosław Kaczyński government has announced the organization of a rally in Warsaw on May 9th – a date of particular significance for Russian historical politics. The initiative has sparked controversy not only due to the date but also because of the originator’s previous statements and public activity.

Rally Location and Date Symbolism

Krzysztof Tołwiński, the former deputy treasury minister, has called on his supporters to attend the meeting planned for May 9th at the Soviet Soldiers’ Cemetery in Warsaw. This date is not accidental – Russia celebrates Victory Day on this day, one of the most important state holidays commemorating the end of World War II.

Not a Traditional Demonstration

The politician emphasizes that the event is not intended to be a traditional demonstration. He believes it will be a form of “testing the ability to think realistically about politics” and an attempt to mobilize groups critical of the current direction of Polish foreign policy. He also appeals for the meeting to be treated as an impulse for “organizing and making changes.”

Political Realism Test or Display of Views?

In statements to the media, Tołwiński argues that the initiative stems from his sense of duty to the state. “In a situation where institutions fail, one must take care of national dignity and interests,” he argued in an interview with the press.

Front Group and Tołwiński’s Political Background

According to media reports, the Front group, led by Tołwiński, has formally registered the rally. This organization remains marginal on the political scene, but its leader regularly speaks out on international affairs, often presenting positions that deviate from the mainstream of public debate in Poland.

Tołwiński’s Political Career

Krzysztof Tołwiński has been involved in politics for over two decades. From 2002–2006, he was a councilor of the Podlaskie Voivodeship from the Polish People’s Party, then obtained a mandate as a Member of Parliament for the sixth term. In 2007, he took the position of undersecretary of state in the Ministry of State Treasury in the Jarosław Kaczyński government.

Recent Political Activity

In recent years, his activity has focused mainly on his own political environment and commenting on Poland’s relations with Eastern European countries, including Belarus and Russia.

Hate Speech Conviction and its Consequences

Additional controversy surrounding the planned rally stems from a recent court verdict against Tołwiński. He was convicted of insulting citizens of Ukraine and inciting hatred on a national basis. In his public statements, he used offensive terms towards Ukrainians and suggested their removal from Poland.

Tołwiński’s Reaction to the Verdict

The defendant not only did not accept the verdict critically but described it as an element of political struggle. He claimed that the court’s ruling was a “distinction” for him and strengthened his position in public debate.
