Hospital Director Drove Ambulance with Relative of MP Without Authorization

In April 2025, a hospital administrator in Knurow, Poland, allegedly used an ambulance to transport a family member of MP Izabela Szumilas without proper credentials.

Investigation Launched into Ambulance Misuse

The Zero.pl portal first reported the incident, stating that Kamil Krzysiński, the administrative director of the hospital in Knurow, used a public ambulance in April 2025 to transport a close relative of MP Szumilas.

Deputy Head of the Gliwice-Zachód District Prosecutor’s Office, Mariusz Dulba, confirmed to PAP on Friday that an investigation was initiated on February 11th, following a notification submitted by the hospital.

Unauthorized Operation of Emergency Vehicle

The investigation centers on allegations that the director exceeded his authority by operating the ambulance without the necessary permits, medical qualifications, or a medical team present, while also improperly securing the patient.

Prosecutors are examining whether the patient was placed in danger and if public interests were harmed. They have requested medical documentation, transport records, the director’s personnel file, and records related to the ambulance’s usage.

MP Szumilas: “I Did Not Verify”

According to the initial notification, the director allegedly took an EKG device from the hospital, drove the ambulance with the patient, and returned with the patient and two family members without informing medical staff.

Tomasz Broda, the former president of the Knurow hospital and current head of the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Mikołów, filed the notification with the Gliwice prosecutor’s office, providing video footage from a nurse and witness statements from two nurses and a doctor.

Former Education Minister Responds

Izabela Szumilas, a member of the Civic Coalition, stated that her 93-year-old mother’s condition deteriorated significantly last year, requiring hospitalization.

She explained that Kamil Krzysiński was present during a home visit by a hospital doctor and offered transport for her mother, which she understood to be free due to her mother’s age.

Transport Details and Lack of Verification

Szumilas stated her mother was transported alone, and she traveled separately. She admitted to not verifying the driver’s ambulance operation credentials, as her focus was on her mother’s deteriorating health.

She acknowledged knowing Krzysiński through county council meetings but denied a close personal relationship or any political connections that influenced the transport arrangement. She expressed confidence in the prosecutor’s investigation.
