Hungary Begins Anti-Corruption Drive to Unlock EU Funds

Incoming Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced a commitment to fight corruption as a condition for receiving billions in frozen EU funding.

EU Funds Tied to Anti-Corruption Efforts

Hungary is initiating a crackdown on corruption, a key requirement set by the European Union for the release of substantial financial aid. Future Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar confirmed that addressing corruption is the primary expectation of EU leaders, according to a report by “HVG”.

Magyar stated that Brussels will provide Budapest with full support to revitalize the economy and ensure citizens benefit from EU opportunities. He emphasized the EU’s willingness to assist Hungary in regaining its position as a constructive member state.

Billions in EU Funding at Stake

Hungary has lost access to approximately €17 billion – nearly 10% of its annual GDP – under Viktor Orbán’s leadership. This includes €10 billion from the post-COVID-19 recovery fund, with a spending deadline of August, and €7 billion from the seven-year EU budget for regional development.

Negotiations and Project Discussions

Magyar revealed discussions in Brussels regarding projects in transport, energy, infrastructure, and housing. He assured Ursula von der Leyen that Hungary is working diligently to meet the August 31st deadline for utilizing the €10 billion recovery fund.

Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe Funding Restored

Magyar also pledged to resolve the issue of access to the Erasmus+ student exchange program and the Horizon Europe research and innovation program for Hungarian students. Funding for these programs was frozen in December 2022 due to concerns about governance of Hungarian higher education institutions.

Shift in Hungarian Politics

Tisza party, led by Magyar, won the April 12th elections, ending Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule. The party secured 141 seats in the 199-member National Assembly, giving it a constitutional majority. The new government will be sworn in on May 9th.
