Interior Ministry Clashes with TV Republika Over Police Intervention

The Polish Ministry of Interior and Administration has condemned TV Republika’s coverage of a recent police intervention at the home of Tomasz Sakiewicz, announcing that legal action will be taken.

Accusations of Harassment

The Ministry described TV Republika’s reporting as an attempt to harass police officers who risk their lives daily. Officials stated the station has crossed a line of decency, prompting the police to file a lawsuit to protect the personal rights of the involved officers.

Contested Police Entry

On May 15, police responded to reports of a potential suicide threat involving a child at the residence of Sakiewicz, arriving within 11 minutes. Sakiewicz labeled the event an unlawful intrusion, claiming police entered by force and handcuffed his assistant.

Ministry Defends Procedures

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski rejected these claims, confirming that no doors were broken and the intervention followed standard child welfare protocols. He characterized the refusal to cooperate with officers during the event as incomprehensible.

Evidence and Privacy Hurdles

The prosecutor’s office is currently investigating the incident. While officials are considering the release of body-worn camera footage, they face complications regarding mandatory privacy redactions, as the footage includes an individual who was not fully dressed and a private citizen who requires facial blurring.

BBN Involvement and Rebuff

The National Security Bureau (BBN) requested information regarding alleged actions against TV Republika journalists. Minister Kierwinski dismissed the inquiry, noting that such interventions fall outside the BBN’s competence and advised officials to rely on official police statements rather than speculation.
