Investigators Have Recordings From Moments Before MP Litewski’s Death

Polish investigators are analyzing surveillance footage and forensic results to reconstruct the final moments before the death of MP Łukasz Litewski in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

Investigation Focuses on Surveillance Footage

Investigators possess recordings from the moments leading up to the death of MP Łukasz Litewski. The analysis of surveillance footage and forensic results is ongoing, with new findings shedding light on the events preceding the tragedy in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

The investigation, led by the Sosnowiec District Prosecutor’s Office, currently centers on analyzing evidence secured immediately after the incident. Crucially, the surveillance recordings cover Kazimierzowska Street, where 36-year-old Left Party MP Łukasz Litewski was fatally struck on April 23rd.

Reconstructing the Incident

Investigators confirm the camera recordings capture moments directly before the accident. The video material has allowed prosecutors to reconstruct a fragment of the event, though a full analysis is still underway. Prosecutor Bartosz Kilian stated that the recordings captured “certain moments” potentially significant for reconstructing the incident.

Securing visual materials is standard procedure in such cases, but their importance is particularly high here. Kazimierzowska Street is covered by both municipal and private surveillance, increasing the chances of accurately determining the vehicle’s trajectory and the actions of those involved before the collision.

Details of the Accident

The accident occurred around 1:00 PM. Preliminary findings indicate that the 57-year-old driver of a passenger car veered into the lane where Łukasz Litewski was cycling. The politician died at the scene.

Possible Causes and Timeline

Initial hypotheses suggest the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel or experienced a sudden health deterioration. He tested negative for alcohol. The 57-year-old had finished work shortly before the incident, around 1:00 PM. The accident was reported to emergency services at 1:17 PM, with the call made by a witness using the driver’s phone, as he was unable to contact them himself.

Evidence Analysis and Medical Examinations

Investigators have secured the phones of both the victim and the driver. Analyzing these devices aims to determine if either participant was using their phone at the time of the accident, potentially affecting concentration or the situation on the road.

Concurrent medical and expert examinations are being conducted. A complete autopsy opinion will be crucial in definitively determining the cause of death. Toxicological tests are also underway to rule out the presence of substances affecting either the victim or the driver.

An assessment of the 57-year-old’s psychophysical state is also a key element of the investigation. Experts are analyzing whether he may have been in a state of reduced capacity to drive at the time of the incident, such as due to a sudden illness.

Legal Status and Preventative Measures

The man has been charged with causing a traffic accident resulting in death, a crime punishable by six months to eight years imprisonment.

Initially detained, the 57-year-old was released at the end of April after posting bail of 40,000 PLN. The court imposed a police supervision order and a travel ban. Due to the tense atmosphere surrounding the case and concerns for the suspect’s safety, police have also provided him with protection, a measure taken when there is a risk of aggression or social pressure.
