Iran Distributes Iodine Tablets Amidst Nuclear Concerns

Iranian authorities have distributed 180,000 iodine tablets to residents of Bushehr, home to the country’s sole nuclear power plant, amid escalating regional tensions.

Iran Prepares for Nuclear Crisis

The distribution of iodine tablets began before a projected 12-day conflict with Israel in June 2025, a decision made by Iran’s national crisis management center.

Initially, tablets were distributed within the nuclear power plant, with the initiative subsequently expanded to encompass the entire city.

Iodine Tablet Distribution Details

All comprehensive health centers are distributing the tablets using pre-prepared forms and guidelines, making them accessible to all residents.

Authorities state the tablets are intended for use in the event of a radiological incident, explaining that such events could release radioactive iodine, readily absorbed by the thyroid.

Taking iodine tablets saturates the thyroid with stable iodine, reducing its uptake of radioactive iodine and minimizing potential damage.

Residents are advised to take tablets 24 hours before and up to four hours after potential radiation exposure, with dosage varying by age.

Escalating Middle East Conflict and US-Iran Tensions

The Middle East conflict began on February 28th with Israeli and US strikes against Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and Arab states in the Persian Gulf, including US military bases and civilian infrastructure.

Iran also blocked navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, halting oil exports from the Middle East.

Trump’s Ultimatum to Iran

US President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Iran regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz expires at 2:00 AM Tuesday/Wednesday (8:00 PM Eastern Time Tuesday). Trump threatened the destruction of all Iranian power plants and bridges if the Strait remains closed.

He reiterated these threats during a Monday press conference, claiming the US won the war and would impose fees for passage through the Strait.

Trump issued further threats Tuesday, stating “entire civilization will die tonight and never be reborn,” while acknowledging the possibility of avoiding such an outcome.
