A high-ranking U.S. official stated Sunday that Iran dismissed demands to halt uranium enrichment and funding of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi movement during peace talks in Pakistan.

Iran Rejects Key Demands in Pakistan Talks

Iran rejected demands concerning uranium enrichment and the financing of Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthi movement during peace negotiations in Pakistan, according to a senior U.S. administration representative on Sunday, as reported by Reuters.

The Iranian delegation also refused to agree to dismantle its largest uranium enrichment facilities and unblock the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian and U.S. Perspectives on the Impasse

Following the unsuccessful talks with the U.S. in Islamabad, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Bagaei stated Sunday that agreement was reached on many points, but differing views on two crucial issues prevented a final accord.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance first reported the lack of agreement in Islamabad during a brief press conference after the conclusion of Saturday’s talks.

Points of Contention in U.S.-Iran Negotiations

Iranian media subsequently reported that various issues, including the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program, were contentious points during the U.S.-Iran talks.

Context of the Negotiations

Peace negotiations between the U.S. and Iran in Islamabad began Saturday afternoon, with Pakistani authorities acting as mediators.

The talks commenced six weeks after Israel and the U.S. initiated military action against Iran. On Tuesday and Wednesday, Iran and the U.S. agreed to a two-week ceasefire, leading to the start of the peace negotiations.
