Israel Strikes Beirut; Iran Threatens “Painful” Response

Israeli forces struck Beirut following Hezbollah rocket fire into northern Israel, leaving two dead and 11 injured, while Iranian officials vowed a “painful” retaliation and warned observers to watch the skies.

Casualties and Iranian Threats

According to Lebanese news agencies, the strike resulted in two deaths and 11 injuries, with the toll expected to rise. Iran subsequently threatened a decisive and painful response, with Iranian lawmaker Ebrahim Rezaei urging observers to watch the skies over Israeli-occupied territories.

The Israeli military stated that the attack served as a direct response to Hezbollah shelling directed at northern Israel.

Fragile Truce Efforts

Tensions remain high following warnings from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi that any Israeli attack on Beirut would be considered a breach of the ceasefire. Despite recent talks in Washington aimed at reinstating a truce conditional on Hezbollah’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the deal collapsed after Hezbollah refused to comply.

Consequently, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined to submit the proposal to the Knesset for a vote.

Regional Escalation and Diplomatic Interventions

Tensions reached a breaking point earlier in June when Netanyahu ordered strikes on Dahiyeh, a densely populated Beirut suburb and Hezbollah stronghold, forcing mass evacuations. Iran reacted by suspending peace negotiations with the United States, demanding an immediate halt to the offensive.

The crisis was briefly mitigated following an intervention by Donald Trump, who engaged in phone diplomacy with both Netanyahu and Hezbollah representatives, later declaring that military forces would not enter Beirut.
