Poland’s consulate in Rome is alerting Polish tourists to a surge in pickpocketing and theft across Italy, particularly during the spring travel season.
Increase in Thefts Reported
A wave of thefts is occurring in Italy, prompting the Polish consulate to warn Polish tourists. Consul General Bartosz Skwarczyński of the Republic of Poland in Rome highlighted the issue to PAP.
The consulate noted that the increase in thefts coincides with the start of the tourist season and the May Day holidays, when many Polish citizens travel to Italy.
Precautions for Travelers
Consul Skwarczyński advised those planning city breaks in Rome or other Italian cities to exercise caution. He emphasized that a trip can be enjoyable with appropriate preparation.
Essential Travel Preparations
Travelers are advised to carry two forms of identification, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), and additional insurance. Registration of travel plans via the Odyseusz system is also considered essential.
Staying Vigilant During Your Trip
The consulate stresses the importance of vigilance while in Italy. While the country is generally safe, pickpockets operate in crowded tourist areas. Tourists should keep documents and money separate, carry bags in front of them, and consider leaving one document at the hotel.
Foreign Vehicle Registration and Security
Vehicles with foreign license plates may attract thieves. Utilizing secure parking facilities and avoiding leaving valuables in cars is recommended. The consulate emphasizes that most problems can be prevented through preparation and caution.
