Justice Minister Warns Hungary Over Ziobro Asylum

Polish Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek warns Hungary may face legal action for granting asylum to Zbigniew Ziobro.

Dubious Practice

Żurek stated Poland lacks official documents confirming Ziobro received asylum and called the practice “surprising.” Neither the Polish Foreign Ministry nor the Prosecutor General’s Office has seen any proof, he added, noting discussions remain media-focused.

He hinted at potential legal steps against Hungary at the EU Court of Justice, warning that if成员国 grant asylum to EU citizens, the European Arrest Warrant could become “fictional.”

Hungary Lacked Basis

The European Commission suggested Hungary had no grounds to grant political asylum to Ziobro or his wife, both investigated for alleged crimes related to mismanagement in the Justice Fund. Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert emphasized all EU countries are considered safe.

He noted asylum for an EU citizen is only permissible in exceptional cases, such as under Article 7 for systemic rule-of-law breaches—currently applied only to Hungary, following Poland’s case closure.
