King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived at the White House Monday afternoon for a state visit commemorating the 250th anniversary of US independence.
Royal Visit to the White House
King and Queen Camilla were welcomed by the Trumps at the White House on Monday afternoon. President and First Lady Trump hosted the royal couple for tea and a tour of the White House grounds, including a newly unveiled beehive designed as a miniature replica of the presidential residence.
First US Visit as Monarch
This marks King Charles’s first visit to the United States as monarch. He is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, stating that the long history between the two nations is one of reconciliation and renewal, according to a statement released by AFP.
Tensions Surrounding Iran
Following the meeting with the Trumps, the royal couple attended a reception at the British ambassador’s residence in Washington. The visit is seen as an opportunity to improve relations between the US and the UK, amid criticism from President Trump regarding British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and within NATO.
NATO Disagreements and US-UK Relations
President Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with NATO members’ reluctance to engage in conflict alongside Israel in Iran. Initially, the British Prime Minister agreed to allow the use of British bases for American aircraft to bomb Iran, but only for defensive purposes. He stated that London would not join the war and questioned the legal basis for US actions.
Trump criticized Starmer, stating he is not Winston Churchill and accusing him of lacking leadership.
Planned Engagements During State Visit
During the four-day state visit, King Charles and Queen Camilla are scheduled to meet with the Trumps three times. The itinerary also includes a visit to a national park, likely Shenandoah in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, and a commemoration of the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks, along with a meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
