A driver struck participants in a Laotian New Year parade in Louisiana, injuring multiple people and leading to the driver’s arrest.
Parade Disrupted by Vehicle Collision
A tragic incident occurred near a Laotian New Year festival – a three-day event held around Easter featuring parades, concerts, and cultural events. The driver struck numerous pedestrians during the parade.
Driver Faces Multiple Charges
Police have arrested a 57-year-old man and charged him with driving under the influence, reckless driving, and 18 counts of first-degree negligent injury. He is also suspected of possessing an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
Investigation Indicates No Intent
Preliminary police investigation suggests the driver’s actions were not intentional, according to Sheriff’s Office representative Rebecca Melancon, as reported by CNN. The driver’s blood alcohol content was 0.137%, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08% in most U.S. states.
Witness Accounts Describe Sudden Acceleration
Witnesses reported the vehicle initially approached the parade slowly, appearing to join the procession, before suddenly accelerating and hitting people. One witness stated, “Everything happened in one moment,” with victims thrown aside by the force of the impact. Some of those injured were riding in a golf cart.
Official Response and Festival Changes
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Attorney General Liz Murrill have pledged support for the victims and praised the swift response of emergency services. Festival organizers have canceled Saturday’s concerts and suspended alcohol sales, expressing deep sorrow and prayers for those affected.
Possible Restrictions for Remaining Festival Events
Organizers are considering limiting Sunday’s events to religious ceremonies and food vendors.
