A large fire broke out at an illegal waste dump on Bardowskiego Street in Warsaw’s Targówek district around 11:10 PM, requiring numerous fire crews.
Firefighters Respond to Multiple Blazes
Around 11:10 PM, a significant fire erupted at an illegal waste dump located on Bardowskiego Street in the Targówek district of Warsaw. Firefighters arriving at the scene discovered several separate fires burning across the site.
Initial assessments indicated a serious situation, with firefighters identifying four distinct fire sources scattered throughout the landfill area.
Possible Arson Investigated
Authorities will investigate the distribution of the fire sources. While the cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, the multiple, separated ignition points suggest the possibility of deliberate action.
Challenges in Fire Suppression
Numerous fire crews and a city operational group are working at the scene. Access to some areas was initially difficult due to the accumulation of waste and the unprepared terrain of the illegal landfill.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze despite the challenging conditions.
Air Quality Concerns and Police Presence
Heavy smoke filled the area surrounding the fire. Residents of nearby buildings are advised to close their windows as a precaution to prevent smoke from entering their homes, especially considering the unknown composition of the burning waste.
A significant police presence is securing the area and investigating the circumstances of the incident. Currently, no injuries have been reported.
Extensive Cleanup Operation Expected
The process of extinguishing the fire and thoroughly soaking the debris will take considerable time. Firefighters must carefully inspect the site, as smoldering embers can persist beneath layers of waste at landfill sites.
Recurring Fires at the Landfill
This is the latest in a series of fires at this illegal landfill. Previously, approximately 200 square meters of abandoned waste had burned in the same area.
