A 24-year-old man from Góra Kalwaria faces court after being caught painting graffiti, claiming it was political expression.
Illegal Act with Consequences
Applying graffiti to building walls is illegal and punishable by a fine or restriction of liberty. Despite this, many young people still view it as harmless self-expression. This was the case for a 24-year-old man arrested by police from the Góra Kalwaria Police Station.
Graffiti, perceived by some as art or protest, constitutes an offense under current law. Damaging building facades carries penalties such as fines or liberty restrictions, alongside costs for removal.
Police Response
Asp. Kamil Niedziałek of the Góra Kalwaria Police Station received a report about graffiti on a wall at Ks. Sajny 23. An anonymous tip indicated a young man in a violet jacket had written one graffiti and was heading towards ulica Strażacka.
The officer, with Constable Łukasz Choroś, immediately proceeded to the area, where the suspect was apprehended.
Caught in the Act
The suspect was a 24-year-old resident of Góra Kalwaria. His hands were covered in paint matching the graffiti color. Additionally, he possessed spray paint cans. The man attempted to convince officers his actions expressed dissent against global events, forgetting such expression is illegal.
Legal Proceedings
The man was taken to Góra Kalwaria Police Station. It emerged he had also graffitied other buildings, as confirmed by surveillance cameras. For violations under Articles 63a, 65a, and 141 of the Code of Petty Offenses, police submitted a punishment request to the Piaseczno District Court, which will decide on the sentence.
Public Reminder
Expressing views and emotions is important, but must always be done legally and without breaking norms. We urge caution and remind that consequences for seemingly “harmless” acts can be severe and costly.
