Emergency services are battling a major forest fire in Międzylesie, Wołomin County, that broke out on Thursday afternoon, forcing evacuations and triggering a massive aerial and ground response.
Large-Scale Firefighting Operation
A massive firefighting operation is underway in Międzylesie, Wołomin County, following a forest fire that began on Thursday, May 28. Sixty-five fire brigade units, four Dromader aircraft, and a Black Hawk helicopter have been deployed to contain the blaze. Authorities have initiated the evacuation of residents in the village of Ołdakowizna.
Aerial Strategy and Environmental Factors
Wiesław Szczepański, Deputy Minister of Interior and Administration, described the situation as a crown fire, where flames spread through the tops of trees. He noted that aerial suppression is the primary strategy, though the operation is hindered by extremely dry forest floor conditions caused by a lack of recent rainfall.
Satellite and Radar Tracking
The scale of the fire is significant enough to be tracked via meteorological radar and satellite imagery. The blaze has been spotted from as far away as Mińsk Mazowiecki, with smoke visible across the entire region.
Aerial Support and Technical Challenges
Police aviation has been instrumental in the response, utilizing a Bambi Bucket system to drop 93,000 liters of water in 31 separate missions. However, high winds have caused the fire to spread rapidly, creating hazardous conditions for both ground crews and pilots. Police units continue to patrol the area, using public address systems to urge residents to follow official safety instructions and evacuation orders.
