Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke with Donald Trump regarding his proposed European tariffs.
Trump Announces Tariffs on European Countries
Donald Trump announced that the United States will impose 10% tariffs on several European countries unless Denmark agrees to sell Greenland. According to the American president, global security is at risk otherwise. On this topic, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke with the US leader on Sunday, later telling reporters that she “conveyed to Trump what I think about this.”
“I believe that imposing new sanctions would be a mistake,” emphasized the politician, as quoted by “The Guardian.”
European Leaders Respond to Trump’s Threats
Trump’s threats were met with comments from many European leaders. German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil declared that Germany and its European partners will not be blackmailed by Trump. The Vice Chancellor added that Germany will always try to find a common solution with the United States, but in this matter, it is impossible to agree with the actions of the American administration.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that a US invasion of Greenland territory “would make Vladimir Putin the happiest person in the world” because “it would legitimize his attempt to invade Ukraine.” UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy emphasized that the country’s position on Greenland “is not negotiable.” She also announced that Prime Minister Keir Starmer will speak with Trump “at the earliest opportunity” about the US tariff hike announcement. Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel called Trump’s threats “blackmail.”
Emmanuel Macron warned that “no intimidation or threats” will convince European countries to change their position on Greenland or Ukraine, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stressed that “there is no place for threats among allies.”
Eight Countries Issue Joint Statement
Great Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden also issued a joint statement in which they emphasized that “they stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland.”
“Threats to introduce tariffs undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous escalation of tensions. We will remain united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to protecting our sovereignty” – the authors of the document assured.
Details on Trump’s Tariff Announcement
The President of the United States announced that starting in February, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. He added that tariffs will increase to 25 percent if an agreement is not reached by June 1.
“I will impose sanctions on countries that oppose our demands. We need Greenland from the perspective of US security,” Trump emphasized. He published the decision to impose tariffs on social media, arguing that the United States has provided assistance to Denmark and other EU countries for decades, without imposing tariffs on them and ensuring, as he put it, maximum protection.
“Recent decisions could potentially pose a dangerous test for the United States’ partners in Europe,” warns the Associated Press news agency. “The president seems to suggest that he is using tariffs as a means of pressure to force talks with Denmark and other European countries about the status of Greenland,” concludes Associated Press.
