Violet Beach in Mielno
A 500‑metre stretch of beach east of the Jamneń Canal in Mielno has turned violet, surprising tourists and local officials. The change was first reported on Tuesday evening.
Tourist Tomasz remarked, “At first I thought someone had dumped poison here. Later I saw that the storm‑stirred sand reveals veins of this violet earth.” He concluded the phenomenon was natural.
Causes of the Unusual Beach Phenomenon
Spokeswoman Ewa Wieczorek of the Szczecin Marine Office explained that luminous streaks form due to silicate minerals. “We especially see this on the central coast,” she said.
Professor Leszek Łęczyński of the University of Gdańsk elaborated that the effect results from the accumulation and selective exposure of these minerals, a discovery noted last year.
