Morawiecki vs. Czarnek: Polish Voters Weigh in on Prime Minister Candidates [Poll]

A recent poll reveals Polish voters are divided between Mateusz Morawiecki and Przemysław Czarnek as potential prime minister candidates, with many seeing no difference.

PiS Nominates Czarnek, Sidelines Morawiecki

Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the PiS party, announced Przemysław Czarnek as their candidate for prime minister in early March, stating the need to win and form a new government in the current challenging circumstances. He believes Czarnek is capable of meeting this challenge.

This decision distanced Morawiecki from regaining his former position. However, the former prime minister remained active, criticizing the ruling coalition through social media, public appearances, and university visits. Czarnek also campaigned, presenting his vision for Poland.

Morawiecki’s Association Sparks Internal Concerns

The emergence of Morawiecki’s “Rozwój Plus” (Development Plus) association created tension within PiS, raising fears of a party split and the formation of a rival political force. Kaczyński expressed concern that the initiative would harm both PiS and Poland.

He warned that those involved would be excluded from PiS electoral lists and face other consequences as outlined in the party statutes.

Poll Results: No Clear Preference

A SW Research poll conducted on April 23rd, surveying 830 individuals, asked who would be a better prime minister: Morawiecki or Czarnek. The results showed 23.6% favored Morawiecki, while 11.9% supported Czarnek. A significant 42.2% stated they saw no difference between the two, and 22.3% found it difficult to say.

Compromise Reached: Morawiecki’s Group to Join Expert Council

Following lengthy discussions, Kaczyński and Morawiecki reached a compromise. PiS spokesman Rafał Bochenek announced that members of Morawiecki’s initiative would join the PiS Expert Council.

As a result, the Rozwój Plus association will cease accepting new members, establishing local structures, or appointing representatives. The composition and leadership of the Expert Council will be determined by the Committee’s Presidium.
