MP Łukasz Litewka Dies After Bicycle Collision; Driver Detained

Łukasz Litewka, 36, a member of parliament for The New Left and known for his charitable work, died tragically on Thursday afternoon after being hit by a car while riding a bicycle.

The accident occurred after 1:00 PM on Kazimierzowska Street in Dąbrowa Górnicza.

Driver in Custody, Facing Charges

The 57-year-old driver is facing charges related to causing a fatal traffic accident. He spent a significant portion of the day undergoing medical examinations.

Prosecutor Bartosz Kilian stated that the suspect’s interrogation was suspended while he reviews the case materials with his lawyer. Prosecutors are leaning towards requesting a temporary arrest.

Litewka’s Background and Political Career

Łukasz Litewka was born on May 9, 1989, in Sosnowiec. He was a graduate of the University of Silesia, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

He began his political career in 2014 when elected as a councilor for Sosnowiec on the SLD Lewica Razem ticket, and was re-elected in 2018.

Parliamentary Success in 2023

In 2019, Litewka unsuccessfully ran for parliament in the Katowice, Dąbrowa Górnicza, and Sosnowiec district. However, in the 2023 parliamentary elections, he secured a seat in the Sejm, winning from the last position on The Left’s list.

He received approximately 40,000 votes, nearly twice as many as the party chairman, Włodzimierz Czarzasty.

Charitable and Social Initiatives

Litewka was widely recognized for his charitable and social activities. His #TeamLitewka initiative used social media to raise awareness and support for children’s medical treatments and animal welfare.

The initiative also responded to difficult situations within the local community, collecting funds for rehabilitation equipment and assistance for accident victims.

“Zwierzogranie” Animal Welfare Campaign

Litewka conceived and initiated the nationwide “Zwierzogranie” campaign, implemented by his #teamLitewka Foundation in collaboration with the Sosnowiec local government.

Inspired by the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, the event aimed to support animal shelters and combat animal homelessness, including fundraising, behavioral lectures, and animal adoption presentations. The second edition was scheduled for June 14th in Sosnowiec’s Środulski Park.
