Polish President Karol Nawrocki declined an audience with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, sparking tense reactions from parties across the spectrum.
Nawrocki Rejects Orban Meeting
President Nawrocki said he would not meet Orban in Budapest, citing concerns over the Hungarian leader’s pro‑Russian policies. This decision followed an invitation that was publicly dismissed.
PO Politicians Praise Move
Members of the Polish People’s Party, including Piotr Zgorzelski, praised the decision, saying the President shows he understands the state’s major interests. Minister‑of‑Interior Marcin Kierwiński also welcomed the stance, noting that the President listened to the government’s concerns.
Confederacy Calls Decision a Mistake
Right‑wing leaders, such as Krzysztof Bosak and Anna Bryłka, slammed the cancellation as unnecessary and emotional. They warned that Poland should maintain ties with Hungary “because of the Visegrád Group, proximity, and partnership.”
Opposition Calls for Wider Action
Opposition figures, including Krzysztof Breja and Agnieszka Pomaska, urged criticism of PiS officials seen as close to Orban. They suggested that when the President shortens his stay in Hungary, PiS MPs should follow suit.
International Context and Future Talks
Despite the fallout, Nawrocki will attend the Visegrád Group summit in Ostrów. He has also stated that the decision to cancel the meeting was prompted by the Hungarian PM’s visit to Moscow and talks with President Putin.
