Netanyahu Orders Drone Bombing of Aid Flotilla Heading to Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized a drone attack on a humanitarian aid flotilla headed to Gaza, striking vessels on September 8 and 9 amid international protests.

Flotilla Seized on 1 October

On Wednesday the evening of 1 October Israeli forces detained most vessels of the aid flotilla approaching the Gaza Strip. In total 443 individuals from several countries were taken aboard Israeli ships, including four Poles, one of whom is Polish parliamentarian Franciszek Sterczewski.

Polish Delegation Refuses Voluntary Deportation

The Polish members of the flotilla declined to sign a declaration of voluntary deportation, meaning they will await court proceedings in Israel rather than be expelled from the country.

Netanyahu Authorizes Drone Attack on Flotilla

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally approved a military operation targeting two ships carrying aid to Gaza, as reported by CBS News on 3 October. The decision was based on intelligence from two anonymous U.S. officials.

Family Ship Under Portuguese Flag Attacked

One of the targeted vessels, the Family ship flying the Portuguese flag, was reportedly struck by a firebomb launched from a submarine. The ship was docked near Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia at the time of the assault, causing a fire aboard.

Attack Planned to Avoid High‑Profile Personnel

Sources claim the attack on 8 September was timed to coincide with the absence of high‑ranking officials aboard the ships, including Portuguese MP Mariana Mortagua. A similar incident on 9 September targeted the British‑flagged Alma, also setting fire to the vessel but having the blaze quickly extinguished.

International Law Condemns Targeting Civilian Vessels

According to CBS News, the use of incendiary weapons against civilian populations or civilian objects is prohibited under international humanitarian law and the laws of armed conflict, regardless of circumstances.

Israel Continues Gaza Strikes Despite Trump Appeal

Despite a request from U.S. President Donald Trump to halt bombardments after Hamas accepted a ceasefire, Israel carried out dozens of airstrikes on Gaza, according to the Gaza Civil Defense Agency.
