New Head of Poland’s National Security Bureau to be Appointed

The President’s spokesperson announced the upcoming appointment of a new head of the National Security Bureau (BBN) within weeks, clarifying General Andrzej Kowalski will not fill the role.

Resignation and Transition at the BBN

Presidential Spokesperson Rafał Leśkiewicz stated on Friday that the name of the new head of the National Security Bureau will be revealed within the next few weeks. He emphasized that General Andrzej Kowalski will not assume the position.

The current head of the BBN, Sławomir Cenckiewicz, announced his resignation on Thursday, citing “illegal actions by the Donald Tusk government, which does not respect court rulings and unjustifiably deprives him of access to classified information.”

Kowalski’s Role and Cenckiewicz’s Future

General Andrzej Kowalski, the current deputy to Cenckiewicz, has been appointed as the acting head of the BBN. Leśkiewicz confirmed Kowalski will not be the permanent replacement.

Cenckiewicz will continue to chair the National Security and Defense Council, a presidential advisory body. His future activities beyond this role are considered a private matter.

Cenckiewicz Joins Czarnak’s Team

Leśkiewicz noted that Cenckiewicz has joined Przemysław Czarnak, the PiS candidate for prime minister, as a close advisor on security matters. Cenckiewicz stated he intends to share his knowledge and experience from previous positions and the 2024/2025 election campaign with Czarnak.

Report on the Dissolution of Military Intelligence Services

The President’s spokesperson addressed the upcoming publication of an addendum to the report concerning the dissolution of the Military Intelligence Services (WSI). He assured that no data impacting national security would be released publicly.

President Karol Nawrocki previously submitted the anonymized addendum to the report to the Speakers of the Sejm and Senate for review, a formal step towards declassifying and publishing the document.
