Tusk Criticizes Duda, Nawrocki Over Zondacrypto Scandal

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused President Duda and presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki of potentially lobbying for cryptocurrency firm Zondacrypto, alleging a “smell” of impropriety from the start.

Tusk’s Accusations and Political Ties

Premier Tusk, returning from an EU summit in Cyprus, responded to questions about the Zondacrypto exchange, questioning whether PiS, Konfederacja, and the President’s Office acted as lobbyists for the cryptocurrency industry, and sometimes for Zondacrypto itself.

He stated that the political connections, the presence of PiS politicians, President Duda, and candidate Karol Nawrocki at events funded by Zondacrypto, and the associated advertising, signaled potential issues.

Warnings Ignored and Regulatory Failures

Tusk emphasized he had warned President Duda about the risks associated with the crypto market and Zondacrypto. He added that effective state oversight was impossible due to a lack of regulations, blaming Nawrocki, PiS, and Konfederacja for this failure.

Allegations of Russian Mafia Links

Tusk stated he could not replace the prosecutor or the court in determining if actions were taken on Zondacrypto’s behalf or by other market actors. However, he asserted the case “smelled from the beginning,” describing the firm’s origins as “very ambiguous” and citing “evident” ties to the Russian mafia.

He added, “I couldn’t have told them the brutal truth more clearly.”

Veto and Blocked Regulations

Regarding President Duda’s veto of the crypto market act and its non-rejection by the Sejm, Tusk said he had acted as openly as possible to secure the legal tools for state control of crypto assets.

He accused Duda, Nawrocki, PiS, and Konfederacja of stubbornly blocking regulation, endangering state security and causing losses to thousands of people.

Prezes Kral’s Location and Potential Extradition

Tusk confirmed reports that Zondacrypto CEO Przemysław Kral is currently in Israel, and when asked about potential extradition, he described it as a delicate matter.

He clarified that extradition is a consequence of actions by the prosecutor and the court, and that his personal disapproval of Kral is insufficient grounds for extradition, noting the difficulties of extradition from Israel due to its policy of not extraditing its own citizens.

Diplomatic Challenges of Extradition

Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek confirmed that Poland is verifying Kral’s presence in Israel and that he holds Israeli citizenship.

Żurek emphasized that extradition is complicated when the individual holds citizenship in a country that does not extradite its own citizens, noting that potential criminals are aware of these safe havens and prepare accordingly. He described potential extradition efforts as “very difficult diplomatic talks” and “complex procedural decisions.”

Kral’s Israeli Citizenship and Onet’s Reporting

According to Onet, Przemysław Kral has been in Israel for a week, citing two sources. One source in law enforcement indicated Kral is hoping for protection based on his Israeli citizenship, as Israel does not extradite its citizens to foreign law enforcement agencies.
