Poland’s National Health Fund eliminates referral requirements for gynecologists, oncologists, psychiatrists, and other key specialists starting September 2025.
Current Specialist Access Without Referrals [Changes from September 2025]
Public healthcare in Poland provides simplified access to specific specialists. The National Health Fund (NFZ) has waived the referral requirement in three further cases – and several months on, the practical impact of this change is visible. From autumn 2025, you can access these specialists without a referral.
Key Changes for Patient Access
Importantly, patients can choose any NFZ-contracted facility, regardless of location, for their consultation. This allows direct booking with specialists without prior visits to a primary care physician (POZ).
Specialists Now Accessible Without Referrals
Referral-free access currently applies to gynecologists, oncologists, psychiatrists, and other specialists. The full list includes those where lawmakers deemed rapid access crucial for effective treatment and prevention.
Eligible Patient Groups
Beyond the general rules, broad categories of patients can access specialist care without referrals due to specific health or social status. This notably includes individuals with chronic conditions or specific vulnerabilities.
Practical Impact of the 2026 Changes
Several months into the new regulations, the most significant impact is seen in psychological support and eye examinations. Patients no longer need an extra appointment solely to obtain a formal referral, shortening wait times for specialist consultations.
