Old Phone Trade-In Can Lower New Device Cost, But Conditions Apply

Media Expert in Poland offers customers the chance to trade in used smartphones for credit towards new purchases, with potential savings up to 1100 zł.

Old Smartphone as Part Payment for a New Phone

Used smartphones can be used as partial payment when purchasing a new device. In select cases, the benefit can amount to hundreds of złoty, but it’s not a traditional cash sale. It’s worth checking the final amount and whether the funds can be conveniently used before taking advantage of such an offer.

The purchase of a new smartphone increasingly doesn’t mean the old device ends up in a drawer. As part of an in-store promotion at Media Expert, customers can bring in a used phone, have it valued, and use the funds towards subsequent purchases.

This solution works similarly to trade-in programs known in the electronics market. The customer chooses a new model, and the old phone is checked for technical and visual condition. Once the valuation is accepted, the redemption amount is transferred to a gift card that can be used with the retailer.

Up to 1100 zł Bonus, But Not for Every Phone

The most prominent example concerns the purchase of a Google Pixel 10 Pro XL 256 GB. Promotional materials indicate that trading in an iPhone 16 Pro 128 GB in A+ condition can result in an additional promotional benefit of up to 1100 zł.

In an example calculation, the price of a new phone is 4499.99 zł. After accounting for the redemption value, bonus, and discount on the smartphone in the trade-in program, the final price can drop to 2699.99 zł.

However, it’s important to emphasize that this is an example prepared for a specific configuration. It does not mean that every used phone will be valued the same way, nor that every purchase of a new model will entitle you to the same bonus.

Promotion Also Covers Cheaper Smartphones

The promotion isn’t limited to the most expensive devices. Promotional materials also include examples relating to cheaper models.

One calculation concerns the Samsung A57 128 GB. Trading in a Samsung A55 128 GB, taking into account the bonus and discount in the program, the new phone’s price is expected to drop from 1999 zł to 1108 zł. In another example, a Google Pixel 10 Pro 256 GB could cost 2442 zł after trading in an iPhone 15 128 GB and adding the available benefits.

These calculations should be treated as indicative. The final effect depends on the model of the old phone, its condition, and the current terms of the promotion.

What Makes Up the Benefit? It’s Not Always Just the Redemption Price

In these types of promotions, it’s easy to confuse several elements. The amount shown in advertising materials doesn’t always mean solely how much the seller will pay for the used smartphone.

What Does This Mean for the Customer?

Redemption Value: The amount determined after valuing the old phone. It depends on the model, functionality, and visual condition of the device.

Promotional Bonus: An additional benefit available after meeting the conditions of the promotion, e.g., purchasing a selected model.

Discount on New Phone: A price reduction on the new device, added as part of a specific promotion.

Therefore, it’s worth separating these three elements before making a decision. The redemption value alone may be lower than the total benefit shown in the example.

Money Doesn’t Go to Your Account

The most important condition from the customer’s point of view concerns the form of settlement. The program doesn’t work like a traditional sale of a phone for cash. Funds from the redemption go to a gift card, not a bank account or in hand.

This means the offer will be most practical for people who are already planning to buy a new phone or other equipment from the same retailer. If someone simply wants to monetize a used smartphone, selling it on the secondary market may give more freedom.

In practice, the gift card is a way to reduce the cost of future purchases, not a classic cash payout.

How Does Phone Valuation Work?

The valuation of a used smartphone takes place in the store. The seller checks the device and determines its value. According to information provided by the organizer, the verification of technical condition and valuation should take no more than 10 minutes.

The final amount is primarily influenced by: brand, model, age of the device, operation of basic functions, condition of the screen, housing, and any traces of damage. The phone should be able to turn on, go to the home screen or settings, work without being connected to a charger, and have no traces of corrosion indicating contact with liquid.

What’s the Catch?

The biggest mistake is assuming that the promoted amount is guaranteed for every customer. The highest benefits apply to selected models, specific configurations, and devices in very good condition.

Scratches, cracks, a damaged charging port, battery problems, or traces of water damage can lower the valuation or cause the phone to be rejected for redemption. It’s also important whether the device is on the list of models eligible for the program.

Before visiting the store, it’s worth checking the prices of similar smartphones on the secondary market. Only comparing the redemption offer with the real selling price allows you to assess whether the offer is beneficial.

Data in the Phone Must Be Deleted Before Handing Over the Device

Before handing over the smartphone for redemption, you must take care of your private data. This includes not only photos and contacts, but also documents, saved passwords, banking apps, messengers, and accounts in Google or Apple services.

The safest sequence is: backing up, logging out of accounts, deleting apps with sensitive data, removing SIM and SD cards, and then restoring factory settings. Only a device prepared in this way should be submitted for valuation.

The lack of the original box or accessories doesn’t necessarily exclude participation in the program, as the redemption concerns the device itself. The promotional materials also indicate a limit of five devices per person.

Who Runs the Redemption Program?

The Redemption Program is run by Foxway OÜ. Media Expert acts as a trading partner and mediates in the process of redeeming devices. Foxway determines the list of devices and redemption prices. The current valuation of a specific model can be checked with the seller in the store.

This information is important because, formally, the customer shouldn’t treat the program as a standard store promotion. Redemption is a separate mechanism, linked to a partner servicing used electronics.

Is It Worth It?

The offer can be beneficial, but mainly in certain situations. Those who have a working phone in good condition, want to buy a new model covered by the promotion, and don’t need cash, only funds to use with the retailer, benefit the most.

Before making a decision, it’s worth checking three things: how much a similar phone costs on the secondary market, what valuation the redemption program proposes, and whether the bonus and discount actually apply to the selected model. Only the sum of these elements shows whether the exchange is worthwhile.

FAQ. Questions and Answers

Can you get cash for your old phone? No, in the traditional sense. Funds from the redemption go to a gift card, which can be used for purchases from the retailer.

What does the smartphone valuation depend on? On the model, technical condition, appearance of the device, operation of basic functions, and any damage. The screen, housing, battery, ports, and traces of contact with liquid may be important.

Will every phone be accepted? No. The device must meet basic technical conditions, e.g., turn on, work without a charger, and show no signs of corrosion indicating flooding.
