Orbán’s Election Defeat Weakens Polish Right

French daily *Le Figaro* reports that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s election loss is weakening Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) party.

Hungary and Poland – Sister Nations

*Le Figaro* notes that Hungary and Poland are “sister nations,” but also that Poland experiences “political divisions comparable to those in Hungary.”

The paper emphasizes that the illiberal model implemented by Orbán was a significant inspiration for the Polish nationalist right while it was in power from 2015-2023.

PiS in a Difficult Situation

According to the newspaper, the end of Orbán’s rule “puts PiS in a difficult situation.”

Support for Orbán “did not have the expected effect, just like the official visit of Polish President Karol Nawrocki to Budapest a month before the elections,” *Le Figaro* assesses.

Kaczyński’s Response

The newspaper points out that PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński “refrained from congratulating the winner of the Hungarian elections, Péter Magyar,” but “knows that Orbán’s defeat could affect the dynamics of sovereigntists in Poland, where thoughts are already turning to next year’s parliamentary elections.”
