A PiS MP cautioned against leaving the European Union, labeling the idea as populist, while the Foreign Minister warned of economic consequences.
PiS Divisions on EU Membership
Janusz Kowalski of PiS stated he believes Poland should remain in the EU only to serve Polish interests, not EU interests, and also asserted that “the EU harms Poland.”
Krzysztof Szczucki acknowledged disagreement within his party regarding leaving the EU, emphasizing Poland’s continued membership as a matter of national interest.
Appeal to the Right Wing
Kowalski appealed to the Polish right wing to reconsider support for a “Polexit,” describing it as a dramatic situation and a form of populism, urging them to consider the impact on exporters.
Sikorski Warns of Anti-EU Propaganda
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski previously warned against a “Polexit,” criticizing anti-EU propaganda promoted by figures from the previous ruling coalition, citing former PiS MP Krystyna Pawłowicz’s call to leave the EU.
Sikorski ironically noted Poland’s economic progress while suggesting it was being exploited, and stated that Moscow “rejoices in every manifestation of anti-European hysteria.”
Financial Benefits of EU Membership
Sikorski reported that Poland has received nearly 268 billion euros from the EU since joining, averaging over 30 million euros per day, with net gains exceeding 167 billion euros.
Economic Consequences of Leaving the EU
Preliminary estimates suggest a “Polexit” could lead to a 4-7% decrease in GDP, an 8% drop in wages, and a 45-50% reduction in exports of meat and dairy products within the first five to ten years.
