A Historic Sale for Marvel
The iconic illustration, which served as the cover for the 1963 edition of Marvel’s Tales of Suspense, fetched $3.875 million. The sale, reported by UPI, marks the highest price ever paid for an original piece of comic book art.
Market Demand for Rare Marvel Covers
Joe Mannarino, a representative from the New York-based Heritage Auctions, noted that the combination of a fantastic drawing and a historic comic book fueled the record-breaking price. He highlighted that very few early Marvel cover pages remain in existence, making their appearance on the market a significant event that draws intense interest.
Competitive Bidding and Previous Records
The Sunday auction saw fierce competition among six bidders. The previous record for comic art was $3.36 million, set in January 2022 for an illustration by Mike Zeck from the 1984 Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars No. 8, which featured the debut of Spider-Man’s black costume.
