The “Good Start” Program Overview
The “Good Start” program, launched in 2018, provides a one-time 300 PLN payment per school-aged child to help cover costs for notebooks, textbooks, backpacks, and other supplies. This benefit is available regardless of family income, making it accessible to every eligible household.
Despite its popularity, many parents delay or forget to file their applications. While millions of applications are processed in the initial weeks, the benefit is not automatic; parents must submit a formal application every year to receive the funds.
Eligibility and Age Requirements
The benefit is granted once per year for children attending school, typically beginning at age seven when they start the first grade of primary school. It does not apply to children in preschool or those in year-zero preparatory programs.
Support is provided until the student reaches age 20, or age 24 for students with a certified disability. The program does not extend to university students.
Application Deadlines and Procedures
Applications for the 2026/2027 school year open on July 1, 2026. Submissions can be made via the ZUS Electronic Services Platform, electronic banking, the Emp@tia portal, or the mZUS mobile application.
Submitting applications in July or August guarantees payment no later than September 30. Applications filed in September, October, or November will be processed within two months of submission.
Utilization of Funds
The program provides a one-time payment of 300 PLN, a rate that has remained unchanged for nine years. In 2025, ZUS issued nearly 4.8 million payments totaling approximately 1.4 billion PLN.
There is no requirement to present receipts or account for expenditures. Parents may use the funds for any school-related needs, such as stationary, sportswear, or footwear, providing flexibility in managing educational expenses.
