Supermarket Theft in Płońsk
Local police in Płońsk investigated an unusual theft at a local supermarket where a 40-year-old resident of the Dzierzążnia commune stole an entire roll of promotional stickers used to redeem plush mascots. The roll contained approximately 500 stickers, and their value was estimated at nearly 960 PLN. The man confessed to the theft and returned the roll.
The incident took place in late June at a supermarket in Płońsk when the man, standing near the checkout area, took advantage of the moment when no employee was present at one of the registers. He grabbed the left-behind roll of promotional stickers, put it in his pocket, and left the store.
Investigation and Identification
The entire incident was recorded by the store’s security cameras, allowing police officers to secure the footage, analyze the collected material, and interview witnesses. They also identified the vehicle the man used to drive away from the store, enabling them to establish his identity based on the gathered information.
Officers tracked down the 40-year-old resident of the Dzierzążnia commune, who admitted to taking the roll. He explained to officers that while standing at the checkout, he “simply took the roll,” and could not rationally explain why he decided to commit the theft.
Motive and Confession
The 40-year-old also claimed he did not know how many stickers were on the roll and was convinced they had little value. Ultimately, he did not use them to claim promotional mascots and left the roll at his home.
Police findings indicated that the roll contained around 500 stickers, which would allow for the redemption of 16 plush bears. Each bear was valued at approximately 60 PLN, bringing the total estimated value of the stolen stickers to nearly 960 PLN.
Criminal Liability
The man returned the stickers on the day of his interrogation and the presentation of charges. According to police reports, he was ashamed of his behavior and unable to point to a rational reason for taking the roll from the store.
Despite the unusual item stolen, the case ended in criminal liability for the 40-year-old. According to information provided by the police, the crime of stealing someone else’s property carries a penalty ranging from 3 months to 5 years of imprisonment.
