44-Year-Old Ukrainian Arrested in Poland for Brutal Metal Pipe Attack on Coworkers

Following a violent dispute on a construction site near Legionowo, a 44-year-old Ukrainian national was arrested and temporarily detained for severely beating two coworkers with a metal pipe.

Attack on a Construction Site

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 26, right after work finished on a construction plot. According to the responding police, 44-year-old Ukrainian citizen Wołodymyr K. attacked his coworker without a clear reason, striking him in the face with a metal pipe.

Escalation and Assault on a Woman

The prosecutor’s office provides more details on the course of events. A sharp exchange of words and a misunderstanding occurred between the men. The perpetrator was under the influence of alcohol and, according to witness testimony, was very aggressive at the time. He used a metal pipe against the second man. When a woman for whom both men were performing work tried to separate them, she also received a series of pipe blows from the 44-year-old. The attacker beat both individuals on the head and other parts of their bodies. The victims are Polish citizens, and the prosecutor emphasizes that this was not a nationality-motivated attack, reiterating that the Ukrainian was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the event.

Injuries and Charges Filed

As reported by the Legionowo police, both victims lost consciousness as a result of the beating. They suffered injuries to the head, upper and lower limbs, and chest. According to an expert medical opinion, the sustained injuries disrupt the functioning of the victims’ bodies for a period exceeding 7 days. This opinion, along with the testimony of the victims, the victim’s family, and the perpetrator’s explanations, allowed for two charges to be brought against the 44-year-old under Article 157 paragraph 1 of the Penal Code, namely causing medium bodily harm. The act carries a penalty of up to 5 years in prison for the Ukrainian citizen.

He confessed to the committed act. However, his explanations are inconsistent with what the victims say. The suspect minimizes his guilt, making it necessary to conduct supplementary questioning of the victims and possibly the suspect as well, according to the prosecutor’s spokesperson.

Capture and Temporary Detention

The 44-year-old fled the scene before services arrived. Officers from the County Police Headquarters in Legionowo tracked him down and arrested him a dozen hours later in the area of Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki.

At the request of the police in Wieliszew, supported by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Legionowo, the court decided to apply a preventive measure against the detained man in the form of temporary arrest for a period of three months.

Risk of Flight and Potential Requalification

Investigators justify this decision with specific premises. There is a justified fear of flight because the suspect has no place of residence in Poland. He is not registered at the place where he stayed, which is the place where he performed work. He indicated the address of his previous partner for correspondence. Since all participants in the event know each other, there was a risk that the suspect would influence the content of the victims’ supplementary testimony, making his isolation justified, explains Kiełek-Łopińska.

It is also possible that the legal qualification of the act allegedly committed by the Ukrainian will change. The woman who suffered injuries has a scheduled jaw surgery and vision problems. After obtaining exact medical documentation, expert physicians will be appointed to determine what final injuries were sustained. If it turns out to be serious bodily harm, the qualification will be changed, announces the prosecutor’s spokesperson. In that case, the Ukrainian citizen would face from 3 to 20 years of imprisonment.
