78 Landmarks Renamed on Google Maps in Targeted Defacement Campaign

On Sunday, July 5, users discovered 78 offensive and provocative name changes on Google Maps for major Warsaw landmarks, including the Presidential Palace and the Warsaw Uprising Museum.

Unauthorized Edits to Warsaw Landmarks

The Presidential Palace was labeled the “Hooligan Palace,” while the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Warsaw Uprising Museum were renamed with references to the SS and the Third Reich. By 10:00 AM on Monday, CERT Polska had documented 78 such incidents involving state institutions, monuments, and public facilities.

The scale of the incident exceeded initial social media reports, spanning parks, shopping centers, and sports venues. While Google has begun removing the entries and blocking responsible accounts, the perpetrator and the method behind the changes remain under investigation.

Unclear Origin of the Incident

CERT Polska has not confirmed a formal cyberattack or security breach, noting that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions. While some media outlets labeled the event a “hacking attack,” experts stress that the platform’s standard user-correction mechanism may have been abused.

Google maintains that user suggestions for place name changes undergo verification before publication. The company has yet to provide a technical explanation for how so many inappropriate entries bypassed these controls simultaneously.

Ongoing Moderation and Restoration

Google is systematically purging the erroneous names and enforcing its content policies. Although many controversial labels were corrected by Monday morning, some users continued to see outdated information during the transition period.

Due to the lack of a public list from authorities, verified name changes remain limited to documented reports. Incidents involving major sports stadiums and the Copernicus Science Centre were noted, though specific details on these modifications were not always confirmed.
