Understanding the Allowance Criteria
As of March 1, 2026, the orphan’s allowance is 689.17 PLN per month, paid in addition to a survivor’s pension. This benefit is intended for individuals who have lost both parents, or those whose mother has died and the father is unknown. It is rooted in the pension system rather than social welfare programs.
Duration of Benefits and Age Limits
The allowance typically expires at age 16, or at the end of education, generally up to age 25. If a student turns 25 during their final year of studies, the right to the benefit is extended until the end of that academic year.
Lifetime Payments for Specific Medical Conditions
Recipients who become completely incapable of work or incapable of independent existence before reaching the statutory age limit may be entitled to the allowance indefinitely. The right to the payment depends on the timing of the disability onset relative to the survivor’s pension eligibility.
Distribution Among Siblings
The allowance is not shared; each eligible orphan receives the full monthly payment of 689.17 PLN. In families with multiple eligible children, each sibling receives their own separate payment, potentially increasing the total household support significantly.
Application and Appeals Process
To receive the benefit, an ERRD application must be submitted to ZUS. Decisions are typically issued within 30 days. If an application is denied, the applicant has one month from the receipt of the decision to file an appeal with the labor and social security court.
