Prosecution Seeks Prison Time After Knife Attack at Zakopane Quad Rental

Prosecutors in Zakopane are demanding a seven-month prison sentence for a quad bike rental owner who stabbed a man during a dispute over illegal vehicle trespassing on private property.

The Assault on Private Property

The Zakopane District Court has concluded the trial regarding a violent incident at a local off-road vehicle rental facility. Prosecutors and the victim are seeking 21,000 PLN in compensation, in addition to demanding the defendant cover all legal costs. The verdict is scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday, July 15.

Prosecutor Aneta Hładki emphasized that the defendant, Stanisław G., acted with premeditation while intoxicated. The attack occurred as the victim attempted to protect his land from being used as an unauthorized route for tourist quad excursions.

Motives and Legal Arguments

During closing arguments, the prosecution stated that the attack was driven entirely by financial gain and a blatant disregard for human life. The prosecutor argued that the defendant had multiple opportunities to regulate transit routes through legal channels but chose instead to use force against property owners.

Defense attorney Grzegorz Krawczyk admitted partial guilt on behalf of his client. While acknowledging the stabbing, the defense asked for an acquittal on the charge of making criminal threats, noting that Stanisław G. has expressed remorse and apologized to the victim in court.

Background of the Conflict

The incident took place on January 19, 2025, when the defendant, who had a blood alcohol concentration of 1.9 per mille, attacked a resident with a knife, causing wounds to the victim’s forearm and hand. The defendant is charged with exposing the victim to direct danger of loss of life or grievous bodily harm.

This case highlights an escalating tension in the Podhale region regarding off-road vehicle operators. Despite local government restrictions and increased police monitoring in Zakopane, Poronin, and Kościelisko, conflicts over the illegal use of private and environmentally protected lands persist.
