French National Wanted for Arms Trafficking Arrested at Medyka Border Crossing

On July 9, a 25-year-old French national attempting to enter Ukraine through the Medyka border crossing in the Subcarpathian region was apprehended after failing to produce identification documents.

Arrest at the Border

The individual presented himself at the pedestrian border crossing in Medyka. During questioning, he claimed to be a French citizen but lacked any physical documents. Border guards confirmed his identity using biometric data, which includes facial imagery and fingerprints stored in EU passports.

Criminal Charges and EAW

The 25-year-old was subject to a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by French authorities. He faces four years in prison for his involvement in an organized criminal group, illegal trade in weapons and ammunition, and declarations of intent to commit acts of terrorism. Following his detention, a court ordered him into custody.

Previous Border Violation

In a separate recent incident, the Bieszczady Border Guard Unit identified a 40-year-old Moldovan national attempting to enter Ukraine using false data. Biometric verification revealed he was subject to an entry ban for the Schengen area issued by Belgium, valid until the end of 2028. The man was ordered to return to Ukraine and faces up to three years of imprisonment for illegal border crossing.

Functioning of the European Arrest Warrant

The EAW is a judicial request for the arrest and surrender of a person between EU member states. The state where an individual is detained must decide on the warrant within 60 days, or 10 days if the individual consents to the transfer. In 2023, 14,071 warrants were issued across the European Union, with 5,450 executed.
