Two Locations Shortlisted for Permanent US Military Base in Poland

Poland is entering final-stage negotiations with the Pentagon to establish a permanent US military base, a shift that could fundamentally reshape regional security, with officials expected to form a specialized task force soon.

Negotiations move to a decisive phase

The Ministry of National Defence will appoint a specialized negotiation team in the coming days to finalize an agreement with the US regarding a permanent military presence. Concrete locations are currently under review, with key decisions expected within weeks.

Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed in June that the Pentagon is open to the proposal, contingent on the final terms of the agreement. A “force posture review” is currently underway at the Pentagon to guide the next steps.

Ministry forms a specialized task force

Deputy Minister of National Defence Cezary Tomczyk stated that while the transition to a permanent US presence is a multi-year process, the ministry is rapidly mobilizing. The newly formed negotiation team will include leadership from across the department.

Key officials assigned to the effort include Cezary Tomczyk overseeing infrastructure and bases, Paweł Zalewski handling foreign contacts, and Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka managing armament requirements.

Selection of potential base sites

Following a political “green light” from the US, two primary locations have been identified: Greater Poland and Lower Silesia. While these remain the frontrunners, officials have not ruled out the possibility of other sites being considered as negotiations progress.

Shifting from rotational to permanent presence

Poland has long lobbied for a move away from the current rotational model, where units deploy for short-term cycles, toward a permanent structure. A permanent base would allow for the long-term stationing of units, with personnel potentially relocating to Poland with their families.
