Law and Justice (PiS) leader Jarosław Kaczyński has pledged to address comments made by his party’s prime ministerial candidate, Przemysław Czarnek, regarding the cessation of military aid to Ukraine.

Kaczyński’s Official Response

Law and Justice leader Jarosław Kaczyński declared on Tuesday via social media that the party leadership will address the controversial statements made by Przemysław Czarnek. Kaczyński emphasized that PiS remains committed to the necessity of military aid for Ukraine, framing it as a critical component of Poland’s national interest and security.

Czarnek’s Policy Proposal

On Monday, Przemysław Czarnek suggested in an interview with TV Republika that Poland should leverage its position within the EU and NATO to pressure Ukraine into changing its policy toward Poland. He advocated for blocking EU funding for Ukrainian arms and reconstruction until Ukraine adopts different social values.

Political Backlash

Prime Minister Donald Tusk criticized the remarks, stating that Russia could not have imagined a better candidate for prime minister than Czarnek. Other politicians, including Sławomir Mentzen and Adam Szłapka, mocked Czarnek’s lack of autonomy, with Mentzen labeling him incapable of independent decision-making.

Widespread Condemnation

Members of the Civic Coalition, including Roman Giertych and Agnieszka Pomaska, condemned the rhetoric as offensive and reminiscent of Russian propaganda. MEP Dariusz Joński described the situation as a failed radicalization attempt by PiS, labeling those involved as “Putin’s useful idiots.”

International Reaction

Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar officially responded to the controversy by expressing his gratitude to the PiS leader for his continued support of Ukraine.
