Donald Trump has paid roughly $5.625 million to writer E. Jean Carroll following a settlement in a sexual abuse and defamation case. The payout, which includes interest accumulated over three years, was finalized after Trump exhausted his appeals process, as reported by NPR.

The Origins of the Dispute

The conflict began in 2019 when Carroll alleged in her autobiography that Trump sexually assaulted her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in 1996. Trump denied the claims, calling Carroll a liar with hidden motives, which prompted her to file a defamation lawsuit.

The Verdict and Execution

In 2023, a Manhattan federal jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, awarding Carroll $5 million. Attorney Roberta Kaplan confirmed the payment, noting that the jury’s decision has finally been executed after federal judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered the settlement following the Supreme Court’s refusal to intervene.

Ongoing Litigation

Despite this settlement, a separate defamation lawsuit remains unresolved. In that case, a court awarded Carroll $83 million, a figure Trump is currently appealing. Federal courts have upheld the award thus far.
