Public Backs Wage Caps for Doctors: Poll Signals Strong Support Across Political Divide

A new poll reveals that over 77 percent of Poles support the government’s proposal to implement maximum wage rates for physicians, with support remaining high regardless of political affiliation.

Government proposal for salary caps

If Ministry of Health proposals are enacted, a physician’s monthly earnings on a single contract could reach approximately 38,000 to 40,000 PLN, based on a maximum rate of 240 PLN per hour. Jakub Szulc, Deputy President of the National Health Fund (NFZ), confirmed these figures on July 15.

Broad public consensus

A total of 56.3 percent of respondents strongly support the wage cap, with an additional 21.1 percent leaning in favor. Only 6 percent of those surveyed expressed firm opposition to limiting medical remuneration within the healthcare system.

Political alignment on the issue

The measure enjoys significant cross-party support. Approximately 82 percent of government coalition voters and 73 percent of opposition party supporters favor the proposal. Even among undecided or non-voting citizens, support stands at 79 percent.

Context of the Southern Hospital scandal

The government’s push for salary limits follows public outcry regarding irregularities at the Southern Hospital in Warsaw, where a physician without specialized training earned 1.6 million PLN in 2025. Investigations revealed allegations of preferential treatment for political figures at the facility.

Ongoing audit and regulatory oversight

NFZ officials estimate that the audit of the Southern Hospital will conclude by mid-August. Deputy President Szulc noted that the timeline depends on controller access to documentation, noting that law enforcement agencies currently have priority access to these records.
