New Registration Plates on Polish Roads: What the Letter Changes Mean

The Ministry of Infrastructure has introduced new letter designations on Polish license plates due to the exhaustion of existing character combinations, though existing plates remain fully valid for all drivers.

New Plates and the End of Old Combinations

Drivers across Poland are noticing new markings on vehicle license plates. According to the Ministry of Infrastructure, these changes were necessary as the pool of available character combinations has been exhausted.

The good news is that current plates remain valid, meaning drivers are not required to visit transport offices to replace them. However, these new markings will gradually become the standard as existing combinations run out.

Rollout Schedule for New Designations

The new plates are currently appearing on short-format boards for vehicles with limited mounting space and on individual custom plates. The Ministry notes that these changes are not merely cosmetic and will eventually apply to all vehicle owners.

Major cities will be the first to adopt these changes. For example, Warsaw will transition to the letter “A,” Poznań to “M,” and Gdańsk to “X.” Several voivodeships are also updating their identifiers, including Dolnośląskie (V), Małopolskie (J), Mazowieckie (A), Podkarpackie (Y), Pomorskie (X), Śląskie (I), and Wielkopolskie (M).

Transition Timeline and Administrative Rules

The Ministry of Infrastructure emphasizes that the new system only applies to newly registered vehicles once existing combinations are fully depleted. In cities like Warsaw and Gdańsk, this transition process could take between two and a half to three years.

Furthermore, the Ministry reminds drivers that regulations in effect for over four years mean there is no obligation to re-register a vehicle when purchasing one from a different voivodeship, a move designed to save time, money, and reduce environmental impact.
